Kirsten Degner

Kirsten Degner is an artist and graphic designer living on Bowen Island, British Columbia, where she has made her home for more than thirty years. She is married with two children, both of whom have grown up on Bowen Island, surrounded by the forests, shorelines and wildlife that have become an important part of Kirsten’s life and creative work.

With more than twenty-five years of experience in graphic design, Kirsten brings a strong sense of composition, detail and visual storytelling to her art. Her creative practice combines this design background with a lifelong curiosity about nature and a love of collecting.

Over the years, Kirsten has built an extensive collection of natural specimens and found objects. Feathers, fungi, lichen, driftwood, bone, shells and other fragments of the natural world fill her collection and often find their way into her work. She has a particular interest in the flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest and enjoys continually learning about the species, habitats and natural processes found around her.

Kirsten creates Curiosity Nature Vessels which she has branded under the name Between Cedars and Sea. Each one is a carefully composed collection that brings together natural specimens, found objects and sculptural elements which are contained in a glass cloche. Her work is influenced by traditional curiosity cabinets and natural history collections, while reflecting her own contemporary approach to composition and storytelling.

Through her Curiosity Nature Vessels, Kirsten gives these collected pieces a new context and encourages a closer look at the natural world. Her work is rooted in curiosity, observation and an appreciation for the remarkable diversity found in the everyday landscape of island life.

“My art is rooted in curiosity and the simple act of noticing.”
