Simon James was given his native name of “Winadzi” by his Grandfather, Chief James Aul Sewid. The translation is “Raider”. James is the son of well-known Kwakwaka’wakw artist, Simon Dick. At a young age he moved, with his mother and sister, to Campbell River but currently resides in North Vancouver.
James began drawing in elementary school and carving wood at the age of fifteen. He has also been painting and sculpting since 1995. During the important exhibition, Down from the Shimmering Sky held at the Vancouver Art Gallery, James participated in the Artist In Residence program.
Apart from being an accomplished dancer, drummer and singer, James completed his training in computer animation and intends to own and operate the first Aboriginal animation studio in North America. He is the co-creator of "Raven Tales" an animated television series that appears on APTN.
It is his wish to assist the younger generation, as his ancestors did before him. He believes strongly in his culture and frequently participates in important cultural events. The art James creates is a continuance of the stories that were told to him by his father and grandparents.
